Queen's Wharf Lighthouse

What is a lighthouse doing so far away from the shoreline?

Lighthouses are supposed to be on the waterfront serving as a navigational aid for ships. This one is certainly out of place, located between Fleet Street and Lake Shore Boulevard just north of the Coronation Park. So what has shifted; the shoreline or the lighthouse itself? It turns out that both share the blame.

This one was built in 1861 at Queen's Wharf and served its purpose until 1912 when a new channel to the harbor was opened. Over the years, land reclamation efforts transformed the shoreline and the lighthouse ended up inland. It was then relocated at its present location in 1929 under the preservation drive.
