Ireland Park

It is a small park on the lakefront that honor Irish refugees to Toronto during the Great Irish Famine of 1847. Nearly a million people died due to the starvation during that period in Ireland when the Potato crop failed due to blight. Consequently, a large number of people emigrated from Ireland. Of those, over 38,000 came to Toronto and settled here.

Five bronze sculptures by Rowan Gillespie are the main feature of this park.

'Pius Mulvey' sculpture
The ‘Pius Mulvey’ sculpture is based on a character in the book ‘Star of the Sea’ by Joseph O’Connor. 'Pius Mulvey' is depicted as a friendless Irish man in this historical novel, who is trying to escape the famine along with others by coming to the Americas.

The names of those who died in Toronto during the famine are etched in the Kilkenny limestone sculpture wall.
