Monument to the War of 1812 by Douglas Coupland at Bathurst Street & Lake Shore Blvd in downtown, Toronto.
Tensions were running high between the USA and Britain during the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century. In June 1812, the USA invaded and tried to capture the British Noth America (Canada). These attacks were successfully repulsed. Similarly, the British attacks on the US territories were also unsuccessful. It was during this war that British Canadian forces briefly captured American capital and burned the White House.
The war ended in a draw and a peace treaty was signed in February 1815 after nearly three years of hostilities. Nonetheless, this conflict helped in defining the Canadian identity in the coming year.
