To Serve and Protect

This sculpture is the second in the series of three works of art that were created by Eldon Garnet for the Metro Toronto Police Headquarters in 1988. It is located a few steps down the street from the 'Litte Glenn' statue, in front of the police headquarters entrance.

Little Glenn

'Little Glenn' is one of the statues around the 'Metro Toronto Police Headquarters. It was created by Eldon Garnet in 1988. At first glance, it seems like a representation of child labor as a working-class boy is hauling a mighty obelisk on his four-wheel cart. But it actually represents the small police force taking on a huge responsibility of serving the city.

The motto of the police force of Toronto, 'To serve and protect' is engraved around the obelisk.

Five Mighty Frogs

College Park was redesigned and revitalized in 2019. 'Barbara Ann Scott Ice Trail' is the main feature of this park and within this trail, there is an army of frogs calmly sitting around an 'urban frog pond'. 

The park was designed by landscape architects The MBTW Group and RAW Design but I was not able to find the name of the artist who created these cool sculptures.

Clear Day

What a contrast from Yesterday! Skies are clear and deep blue today after yesterday's massive snowstorm. Strong winds have carved the snow like sand in the park.

Some roads and streets in the area are still buried under a heavy blanket of snow and it will take several days for the city crew to clear them. But this is certainly a welcome change in the weather conditions for now.

This is what the real winter feels like...

Just until yesterday, the skies were completely clear and there was not a speck of snow on the ground. Then suddenly the weather system dumped nearly 60 cm of snow overnight. Some of these Christmas characters in our neighborhood seem bewildered at this unexpected change in events. While little snowman on the right and Santa clause certainly look joyful as if they are saying "Now this is what the real winter feels like...".

Alone in the Park in Snowfall

I am walking alone in the park in light snowfall. Not a single soul is in sight. Just soft thud of dropping snowflakes, a low howl of passing wind, and a gentle crunch of snow under my shoes are filling my senses. It is a strange feeling as if the whole world has slipped into a state of deep slumber.

Language Monument

This monument was completed in April this year in Dentonia Park, East York but its plaque has only been added recently. It commemorates the right of all people to speak their mother tongues. This monument is a small-scale replica of the Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The original monument in Dhaka goes up to a height of 14 meters.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day poster at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11 on Dawes Road, East York. 

This day is observed in Commonwealth countries to commemorate the end of the First World War and to honor armed forces members who have died in the line of duty.

Car Art

This car in the parking lot of Shopper's World, Danforth, reminded me of Truck Art in Pakistan. The owner was kind enough to let me photograph the inside of the car too.

Moss Rose

Moss Rose (Portulaca grandiflora) is a common sight in Pakistani gardens and it is locally known as "گل دوپہری". In fact, it is such a familiar flower over there that I always thought of it as a native species. So I was naturally overjoyed to find it here. But a little googling tells me that this succulent plant is actually native to South America. This sun-loving plant is also known as the Eleven o'clock flower, Mexican Rose, and Sun Rose in various parts of the world.
